Kurt Walker exits world boxing championships following defeat in Hamburg
There was no joy for Ireland’s Kurt Walker at the World boxing championships in Hamburg when he lost to Leonel De Los Santos of the Dominican Republic in a preliminary bantamweight bout in Hamburg.
The 26-year-old Lisburn boxer went down on a split 4-1 decision. Unquestionably, the contest was decided in the last half minute of the first round when the Irishman was caught flush on the face by a powerful left and crumbled to the canvass.
Momentarily his body appeared to go limp after he shipped the blow but he did remarkably well to comfortably beat the count. Even though his opponent pressed hard in the closing 20 seconds of the round, Walker held on.
Perhaps sensing that he had enough done, De Los Santos was content to let Walker dictate the two subsequent rounds and the Irishman appeared to land more scoring punches.
But ultimately the judges decided that the 56kg boxer from the Dominican Republic had done enough to secure a place in the next round.
Later today, light welterweight Sean McComb will be in action in a preliminary round tie against Brazilian Joedison De Jesus.
