Joe Ward keeps Irish hopes alive with dominant win over Kizira to advance to quarter-finals
Treble European champion Joe Ward eased his way into the quarter finals of the light heavyweight division at the World championships in Hamburg with a dominant 5-0 win over Georgian Iago Kizira.
After a bleak day for the Irish contingent, Ward lighted the mood considerably when he outclassed the brave but limited Kizira.
He comfortably avoided all Kizira's best shots using his superior footwork to telling effect but once his opponent dvanced he consistently punished him.
The German judge gave Ward the fight by a 30-24 margin meaning that he won each round 10-8. The other four judges were more conventional in their scoring and only slightly less emphatic as they gave the Moate man the bout by a 30-27 margin.
Ward will fight for a place in the semi-finals on Tuesday night.
