Boxing promoter Eddie Hearn has predicted “it would be a complete disaster” if Conor McGregor steps into a boxing ring to take on Floyd Mayweather - but he admits he would be delighted to promote the fight.

Katie Taylor’s promoter does not believe McGregor would have any chance of making an impression on his professional boxing debut against the undefeated Mayweather, even though he accepts the interest in the contest would be enormous.

“It makes such little sense on one side, but so much sense on the other side,” Hearn exclusively told Sky Sports.

“To the man on the street, the non-educated boxing fan, it’s the best fighter in the world against the best mixed martial arts guy in the world.

“To the educated boxing fan, it’s a complete disaster. It’s terrible, just terrible, but if they need a promoter, I’m here to do it.”

Hearn told Independent.ie that McGregor would fail to make the grade as a boxer, as he suggested a showdown with Mayweather was misguided.

Conor McGregor would have no chance of making it as a boxer at this point,” stated Hearn.

“McGregor wants to move in to boxing, but he would be little more than a amateur, even if he shows some decent boxing skills in UFC.

“I’m a big admirer of McGregor and there is no doubt that he is one of the best exponents of MMA in the world right now.

“He’s also brilliant at hyping himself and people are just as excited to see what happens in a McGregor press conference as they are when he fights. The guy is entertaining and he deserves all the success coming his way. He is very, very clever and a promoter’s dream.”
