Ireland’s David Oliver Joyce has advanced to the quarter finals of the lightweight category at the Olympic boxing qualifying tournament in Samsun, Turkey.

Joyce, who was desperately unlucky not to make the London Games, lost the first round of his contest against Otar Eranosyan from Georgia but he won the next two to get the verdict.

He had previously beaten the Georgian in the final of the EU championships in Sofia in 2014.

Meanwhile, Kilkenny heavyweight Darren O’Neill meets Gabriel Richards from Sweden in a last 16 contest later today.

In tomorrow’s quarter-finals Ireland’s three women boxers, Ceire Smith, Katie Taylor and Christina Desmond are all in action while Brendan Irvine takes on Ellie Konki from France in a last eight contest.
