Boxing promoters Oscar De La Hoya and Frank Warren have dismissed Conor McGregor's upcoming fight with Floyd Mayweather Jr. as a 'hoax' and an 'event', while WBA Middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin has described the bout as a 'circus show'.

McGregor will take on Mayweather at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas in August just three weeks before Golovkin is set to fight WBO light middleweight champion Canelo Álvarez at the same arena.

In London for a media day ahead of the September 16 fight, De La Hoya, Warren and Golovkin all discredited the Mayweather-McGregor fight in a series of interviews with the BBC.

De La Hoya, who was an Olympic Gold medallist as an amateur before becoming an eight-time world champion as a professional, said that this Mayweather-McGregor fight was just another hoax orchestrated by Mayweather.

"Here comes the circus into town once again," said De La Hoya when asked about the fight.

"This is really and event of marketing, of publicity, this is another hoax from Mayweather.

"I know for a fact that it's not going to deliver any type of action inside the ring because the bottom line is that McGregor is an MMA fighter.

"He cannot go in there and kick, he cannot go in there and throw you on the floor, he cannot go in there and hit you with elbows, he cannot go in there and choke you out, he's going to have to box and he's never boxed professionally in his life."

Warren, who has been a licensed boxing promoter for nearly four decades, was also skeptical of McGregor's lack of professional boxing experience and said that the difference between the McGregor-Mayweather fight, and the Canelo-Golovkin fight, was that one bout was a fight while the other was an 'event'.

"In Golovkin and Canelo what you've got are two absolutely proven fighters, the best at their game," said Warren.

"Floyd Mayweather, 40 years of age, he's the greatest fighter of his generation but he's fighting a guy in Conor McGregor that may be a great UFC fighter, but I've never seen him in a boxing match.

"I don't know whether he's going to be a good boxer or not, he may turn out to be the greatest boxer ever.. I doubt it.. But that's what it is. You can't compare them. This is a fight and the other one is an event."

Meanwhile Golovkin said that Mayweather-McGregor was a 'circus show' and that if boxing fans have true respect for the sport, they should tune into watch his fight with Canelo.

"This [Mayweather-McGregor] is not for fighters, but business," said the undefeated Kazakh.

"I think people understand what is a true fight, a boxing fight, like mine with Canelo or a big show, maybe sometimes for people a funny show, like a circus show.

"Everybody knows Conor is not a boxer, just a show. If you want to watch a show please watch them, if you want to watch a true fight, a true boxing fight and you respect boxing, watch my fight with Canelo.

"This is business. Conor with Floyd is not a boxing fight because Conor is not a boxer. Money fight OK, show fight OK."
