Dunne delight as 'spectacular' Harrington marches into final
Bernard Dunne hailed Kellie Harrington's "spectacular" semi-final win at the European Union Championships in Cascia, Italy yesterday.
Former world super-bantam champion Dunne, the IABA high-performance director, was at ringside watching the Dubliner produce arguably her best ever performance en route to a unanimous last-four decision over Italy's Rio Olympian Irma Testa.
Harrington, the 2016 World Elite finalist, will now meet Finland's Mira Potkonen, who beat Katie Taylor in Rio, for gold today.
But Offaly welterweight Grainne Walsh had to settle for bronze after losing out on a split decision to Nadine Apetz, despite forcing the German to take a count in the final seconds. ;'Harrington and Belfast bantamweight Michaela Walsh will be in action in today's deciders.
"Kellie has grown and grown in this tournament and this win against the home boxer was spectacular. It was a world-class performance," said Dunne.
"Grainne gave it everything. The result is disappointing, especially as she gave her a count. But her performance was top class. That's what we're looking for from our team, performances. They've all given us that."
