"Another handy one", was Darren O'Neill's tongue-in-cheek reaction ahead of his clash with Olympic champion Evgeny Tischenko at the National Stadium tonight.

The Kilkenny southpaw meets Tischenko in an Ireland 'A' versus Russia clash on the opening day of the weekend's Round Robin also featuring France, Germany and Italy.

The pair have fought twice in the past, winning one each.

Wladimir Nikitin, who controversially beat Michael Conlan at Rio 2016, faces Galway lightweight Pat Mongan this evening.

Nikitin, describing Conlan as a very talented boxer, admitted that his Olympic quarter-final with the Belfast fighter was very close last August.

"It will obviously be a tough one," added O'Neill. "I'm using it was part of my preparations for the Europeans in June.

"Don't get me wrong, I'm stepping into the ring to win, but it's about getting a few rounds now and getting back into the flow ahead of the Europeans."

Meanwhile, Dublin lightweight George Bates will face French Rio silver medallist Sofiane Oumiha over four rounds at the Stadium this afternoon, and 2016 Olympian Steven Donnelly is also in action.

The Round Robin begins at 2.0 and continues tomorrow, Sunday and Monday at the home of Irish boxing.

Former Irish coach Eddie Bolger will lead Team Germany at the Stadium.
