Cork southpaw Christina Desmond has advanced to the last 16 in the welterweight division at the women’s World boxing championships in Ulan-Ude, Siberia.

She secured a shock but deserved win over England’s Commonwealth champion Sandy Ryan in her opening fight.  Even though she received an unwarranted public warning during the fight Desmond still did enough to impress the judges.

Desmond now meets the number five seed Myriam De Silva Rondeau from Canada in a last sixteen fight next Wednesday.

Cavan featherweight Ceire Smith won her last 32 bout on Thursday and Ireland’s two other boxers in Siberia, Michaela Walsh and Amy Broadhurst will be in action on Saturday and Sunday respectively.
