Carl Frampton set to split with promoter Barry McGuigan...Eddie Hearn eager to sign him up - report
Carl Frampton is reported to be on the brink of splitting with Barry McGuigan’s Cyclone Promotions, with Eddie Hearn waiting in the wings to sign up the two-weight world champion.
The BBC are reporting Frampton’s relationship with McGuigan and his organisation ‘fell apart’ during preparations for last month’s world title fight against Andres Gutierrez in Belfast, as a series of unexpected incidents led to the late cancellation of the homecoming fight.
After Frampton failed to make the weight for the fight, Gutierrez then pulled out of the fight after slipping in his shower and suffering facial injuries.
Frampton and McGuigan appeared on camera alongside each other to apoligise to fans after the promotion was called off, yet there is increasingly speculation that the duo will soon announce the termination of their long-standing relationship.
Frampton has been promoted by McGuigan since 2009 and the pair have enjoyed huge success in a partnership that appeared to be close until recent reports of splits in the camp.
Hearn will be eager to step in to offer Frampton a promotion deal if he leaves McGuigan, with the promoter who guided Anthony Joshua to the world heavyweight title and is edging Ireland’s Katie Taylor closer to a world title shot confirming last month he would relish the chance to sign Frampton.
“There’s been no conversations for Carl Frampton to rejoin Matchroom,” Hearn told the Sunday World earlier this month. “Would I be interested? Absolutely.
“I saw all the rumours. I was getting the calls: ‘you signed Frampton,’ my phone was going mad, Irish fans, Irish media asking ‘when are you going to announce it?
“I can’t imagine it’s a great place, whatever is going on in that camp, and it’s got nothing to do with me, it’s none of my business,” he added.
There had been feverish speculation that Frampton had already left McGuigan's set-up after it emerged he had resigned as a director of Cyclone Promotions last month and now there is a growing expectation that the split will be confirmed in the coming days.
