Ireland's Amy Broadhurst celebrated her birthday by winning gold at the Under-22 European Championships in Russia.

Dundalk lightweight Broadhurst got the better of Italy's Rebecca Nicoli on a 4-1 split decision to make it a St Patrick's Day - and birthday - to remember.

"Great win for Amy who has been outstanding throughout these Championships," said Irish team manager Stephen Molloy. "She can now enjoy her birthday with team mate Niamh Earley whose birthday is also today. Another gold medal for Amy, great day for the Irish."

"What an amazing young athlete Amy Broadhurst is. European U22 Gold medalist!," tweeted Bernard Dunne.

"Superb performance against a very tough opponent. Great to see our flag raised high on St. Patrick's Day."
