WORLD and European champion Katie Taylor and Drimnagh BC middleweight Sinead Kavanagh will compete in the Elite Stranja Multi-Nations, which begin in Bulgaria tomorrow.
The tournament will feature the three women's Olympic categories of flyweight, lightweight and middleweight. According to Taylor's coach and dad Peter, the event will be ideal preparation for the European Championships.
The only Olympic qualifier for female boxers will be at the May 2012 AIBA World Championships in Qinhuangdao, China, where Taylor will be aiming for her fourth title in a row.
The Olympic qualification guidelines for this year's AIBA World Senior Men's Boxing Championships have been confirmed. The World Senior Championships and Olympic qualifiers will be held in Baku, Azerbaijan, between September 22 and October 10.
Boxers finishing in a top-10 position in eight of the 10 weight categories -- light-flyweight, flyweight, bantamweight, lightweight, light- welterweight, welterweight, middleweight and light-heavyweight -- in Baku will qualify for the 2012 Olympics in London.
Boxers reaching the quarter-finals in Baku are guaranteed Olympic berths. The remaining two places will go to the boxers that lose to the eventual gold and silver medalists at the last-16 stage.
Heavyweights and super-heavyweights will have to finish in a top six position.
