Boxing: Six Irish guaranteed bronze in Europeans

Another four Irish boxers marched into the semi-finals of the second European Youth & Junior Women's Championships in Calais, France, last night, writes Bernard O'Neill.

Katie Rowland, Mikaela Walsh, Sarah Close and Nicole Meli joined Christiana Gargan and Clare Grace in the last four. All six are guaranteed at least bronze.

Meli, boxing at junior, beat Maria Hamel of Germany and Rowland, Walsh and Close followed that up with wins over Hungarian, French and English opponents.

Rowland beat Vivien Mizsei -- who represented Hungary at the 2010 World Championships -- 7-1 and Close, who was boxing for the second time in 24 hours, hammered England's Jeanne Wilson 15-3.

Gargan and Grace, who won their bouts on Tuesday, will both be involved in semi-final action at the 17-nation tournament today.

European Youth & Junior Women's Championships -- Youth: 51kg: K Rowland (Ire) bt V Mizsei (Hungary) 7-1; 54kg: M Lynch (Ire) lost to M Letkiewicz (Poland) 4-9; 57kg: M Walsh (Ire) bt C Vastine (France) 7-0; 64kg: S Close (Ire) bt J Wilson (Eng) 15-3.

Junior: 60kg: P O'Keefe (Ire) lost to P Berghult (Sweden, retired) 50kg: N Meli (Ire) bt M Hamel (Germany) 4-1 63kg: S Just (Ire) lost to I Lundblad (Sweden) 0-10.
