Boxing: Dominant Taylor storms into last eight
KATIE TAYLOR recorded a 22-3 win over Italy's Romina Marenda to book her ticket into the lightweight quarter-finals of the Women's European Championships in Rotterdam yesterday.
Cavan BC bantamweight Ceire Smith also advanced by dramatically dropping and stopping Hungarian 2010 European bronze medalist Csilla Nemedi in the fourth and final round.
Taylor, aiming for a fifth European title in-a-row, forced Marenda into two standing counts in the second round.
The three-time World champion takes on Ayzanat Hajiyeva of Azerbaijan in the quarter-finals today. Taylor hammered Hajiyeva, who was then boxing for Russia, 20-2 in the semi-finals of the 2008 World Championships in China.
Smith, meanwhile, secured a sensational victory. Trailing 8-4 going into the last round, she floored her Hungarian opponent with a right hook bang on the chin and the referee stopped the contest.
Michaela Walsh, Katie Rowland, Lynne McEnery, Kelly Harrington and Sinead Kavanagh all bowed out.
McEnery was pipped 12-11 by Lynsey Holdaway of Wales, while Harrington lost on the dreaded countback following a 9-9 tie with Martina Schmaranzova of the Czech Republic.
Rowland was retired from her bout against England's two-time World silver medalist Nicola Adams and Walsh lost 16-9 to EU champion Sandra Kruk.
