'Big three' get luck of the draw in Senior Cup

IT was a historic day for Leinster schools rugby yesterday when, soon after noon, coach development officer Dan van Zyl and elite player development officer Wayne Mitchell made the first ever Senior Cup second-round draw following the completion of the first round.

For the big three – Terenure, Blackrock and St Michael's – it was the ideal draw as they won't face each other until at least the semi-finals.

That said, Michael's and pre-tournament favourites Terenure will certainly have their work cut out against the talents of Clongowes and Roscrea respectively.

Clongowes v Michael's will be a repeat of the 2010 and 2012 finals with one win each.

The schools will also meet in the Junior Cup first round at Donnybrook tomorrow.

Roscrea, beaten finalists (against Clongowes) in 2011, will prove a massive obstacle for the 'Nure in search of a first outright success at this level since 2003.

For CBC and Newbridge, winners over St Mary's and King's Hospital respectively, opportunity knocks for a place in the semi-final. While for Blackrock, having fallen to Kilkenny in 2007, complacency will be the last thing afflicting this impressive looking outfit as they approach this tie.

Leinster Schools Senior Cup quarter-final draw:

• Newbridge v CBC, Monday, February 18, Donnybrook

• Roscrea v Terenure, Tuesday, February 19, Tallaght Stadium

• Kilkenny v Blackrock, Wednesday, February 20, Donnybrook

• Clongowes v St Michael's, Friday, February 22, Donnybrook

(All matches kick off at 4.0 and live on Setanta)
