Basketball: Scannell basks in glory of Montenotte's sweet success

Montenotte of Cork retained their crown for the third season running when overcoming 2007 champions DCU Mercy by seven points after a tense encounter at the National Basketball Arena, Tallaght.

On achieving the three-in-a-row, Montenotte coach Mark Scannell said: "It's great. We weren't even thinking about it until someone said it during the week and to win in a transition season makes it even sweeter."

Having built up a half-time lead of 14 points, DCU seemed to have ensured victory. Everything changed though in the third quarter as the Cork side battled back to leave themselves within two points of DCU going into the deciding 10 minutes.

Five unanswered points from Marie Breen and a last-gasp three-pointer from just inside the halfway line was enough to see Montenotte overcome the National Cup champions.
