‘Utterly baffling’ – Derval O’Rourke questions WADA chief's backing of embattled Seb Coe
Derval O’Rourke has revealed her surprise at World Anti-Doping agency report author Dick Pound’s comments regarding Seb Coe.
A second report compiled by an independent commission of WADA said the IAAF Council - which included Coe, now the president of the sport's world governing body - ''could not have been unaware of the extent of doping in athletics''.
Commission chairman Dick Pound, speaking in Munich, gave his full backing to Coe remaining as IAAF president, despite the report's damning verdict on the organisation's response to Russian doping.
Today he added his belief that Coe remains the man to lead the reform.
"There's an enormous amount of reputational recovery that has to occur here and I can't think of anyone doing better than Lord Coe to lead that,” he said.
“So all our fingers are crossed in that respect."
Former Irish athletics star O'Rourke posted on her Twitter account her bemusement with Pound’s comments.
“I'm finding Dick Pounds comments that Seb Coe is the person to lead athletics utterly baffling considering today's report #wada #athletics,” she wrote.
Athletics Ireland CEO John Foley has given his public backing to the embattled IAAF president.
“Athletics Ireland believes Sebastian Coe should be given time as President of the IAAF to make the changes that are clearly necessary and to do so in a visible, open and urgent manner,” their statement read.
“Sebastian Coe is a strong character and now needs to show that strength of character and deliver radical reform for our sport.”
