Sophie O'Sullivan, the daughter of Sonia O'Sullivan, made the ideal start to her international athletics career when taking victory in her 800m heat at the European U-18 Championships in Gyor, Hungary yesterday evening.

The 16-year-old surged to the lead approaching the finish to win in 2:12.23 and advance to today's semi-final.

"I'm very happy with that, I wasn't expecting to go and win it," said O'Sullivan. "I was feeling OK and thought I may as well try to take it up. Everyone was coming the last 30 metres but it was really good to get the win."
