European Cross Country champion Fionnuala Britton got her new year off to a flying start in 2011 when winning the women's event in the Tom Brennan Trophy 5k Road Race in the Phoenix Park on January 1.
The Kilcoole AC star has enjoyed her best running year to date over the past 12 months, and she may well be tempted to return to the Phoenix Park on Sunday to race again in the New Year's Day Tom Brennan Trophy 5k organised by Liffey Valley AC.
This year's event, which starts at noon on the Furze Road, will mark the beginning of a year of special celebrations for the 350th anniversary of the establishment of the Phoenix Park.
Brian Hayes, TD and Minister of State at the Department of Finance, with responsibility for the Office of Public Works, will start Sunday's race, which takes place over a two-lap circuit.
Last year, Britton set a women's course record of 16:39, which will be hard to beat, and the men's record of 14:39 -- set in 2006 by James Nolan -- will also present a formidable challenge for the elite male runners.
This is always a most enjoyable and well-organised event, the ideal race to get your running year off to a positive start. Late entries will be accepted up to a half an hour prior to the start.
There are souvenir T-shirts for the first 300 finishers. Further details are available at www.liffeyvalleyac.com or from Nick Davis on 087-2286913.
