Athletics: Ciobanu times his run to perfection to claim top honours in Ballycotton

Sergiu Ciobanu, the Moldovan native who runs in the colours of Clonliffe Harriers, yesterday ran a personal-best time of 49 minutes and 37 seconds to win the annual Ballycotton 10-mile road race in East Cork.

Ciobanu (29) ran a perfectly paced race and made his winning seven miles into yesterday's event when he caught and passed leader Alan O'Shea of Bantry AC. Ciobanu, who works in a meat factory in Cahir in Tipperary, now plans to run in the SPAR Great Ireland Run in April. O'Shea, who is training for the Amsterdam Marathon, was second in 50:00 with Sean Hehir 59 seconds back in third.

Leevale's Lizzie Lee was a clear winner of the women's race in 58:48 from Angela McGann of Clonmel (59:19) and Catherine Dowling (59:25).

At the Cara Bundoran Run 10-Mile event on Saturday, Derry's Patrick Hamilton won in 50:18.
