Off the Ball: No doubt that the best team won the title

When something happens in sport that we don't see coming, we feel the need to qualify it.

Sure, Leicester are the champions, but they're not the best team in the league? I've heard that a few times this week. Spurs have the better players and are the better team.

I don't buy it. I've watched Tottenham's last two games. Both times, they were scintillating for the first 45 minutes, playing a style of football Leicester could only dream of. And both times, they capitulated under pressure.

And that's the difference. When the pressure was most on Leicester, they went on their best run of the season. Their defence has been impeccable with no silly mistakes. They showed professionalism and composure.

For some reason, these characteristics don't factor in the bar stool arguments about who has the better players? But they are as important a part of football as anything.

Spurs have had an outstanding season but they weren't the best team.

The best team were the last ones standing when everyone else faltered. They have been outstanding. Just because none of us saw this coming shouldn't diminish that.
