Magnificent boxers still flying flag
Another week, another amazing tale of boxing triumph from Ireland. And it's not even over yet.
Before this week, Ireland had medalled nine times at the men's World Boxing Championships. This week, we pick up another three.
Before now, a solitary silver for Jason Quigley two years ago was the only non-bronze of those appearances on the podium. By tomorrow night, at the very least we'll have two more.
And up until this trip to Doha, we've never had a world champion in the amateur ranks. Who knows? We may have two this week thanks to the excellence of Michael Conlan and Joe Ward.
It's an incredible trajectory for Irish boxing and the high performance unit that sometimes gets overlooked in the expectation of achievement.
Since the Beijing Olympics, we've had a medallist at every World Championships. When you add to that a glut of European champions and six men's medals at the Olympics and not to mention what Katie Taylor has given us, it really is an unheard of level of success.
On a week when our footballers beat the world champions and our rugby team produced the performance of their lives, it's easy to get lost in the shuffle, but let's not forget the group that gives us our most consistent and continued success. On to Rio.
