White: It just sucks to end it like this
The UFC president Dana White was left dejected by the sulphurous scenes that cast a shadow over a night that had been billed as the biggest in the history of the UFC.
The contest itself became largely irrelevant as the fighting between Conor McGregor and Khabib Nurmagomedov, who retained his lightweight title, spilled out of the octagon in Las Vegas.
"I've been doing this for 18 years and I couldn't be more disappointed," White said at the post-fight press conference.
"I should be in here bragging about the pay-per-view but I haven't even looked at that or talked about it with anybody.
"We should all be celebrating how when you put on the right event with the right guys at the right time, it works.
"It was a very good week for everybody. It just sucks to end it like this, instead of celebrating we're saying, 'That was pretty s***'."
Who the two fighters challenge next remains to be seen while McGregor's coach immediately shot down suggestions the Dubliner could retire after this comprehensive defeat.
"Another historical night," John Kavanagh wrote. "Amazing atmosphere, technical fight with excitement all the way through. All that makes MMA a great sport. Shame about the ending. On to the next one."
In the short-term Nurmagomedov will fear the post-fight brawl will land him in similar trouble to Mike Tyson, who was handed a suspension from boxing and a $3,000,000 fine after going on the rampage in 1997 after biting Evander Holyfield's ear. Tyson last night labelled the McGregor brawl as "crazier" than his own.
