Conor McGregor set to fight for UFC lightweight title against Rafael dos Anjos on March 5
UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor could be a dual-weight title holder by St Patrick's Day after overnight reports claimed that he would fight for the UFC lightweight title on March 5 against Rafael dos Anjos.
Jeremy Botter of Bleacher Report reported the bout will take place in Las Vegas, either at McGregor's happy hunting ground of the MGM Grand or Mandalay Bay.
BREAKING: Multiple sources confirm UFC will soon announce UFC 197 for March 5 in Vegas with Dos Anjos/McGregor and Holm/Tate.— Jeremy Botter (@jeremybotter) January 8, 2016
The Crumlin mixed martial artist had the option of a rematch against Jose Aldo, a featherweight defence against Frankie Edgar or a meeting with Dos Anjos and the Dubliner appears to have picked the latter.
It is seen in MMA circles as the 'money' option, despite the fact that Dos Anjos isn't that big a name in the UFC, because McGregor will be bidding to become only the third person to hold two UFC titles simultaneously.
If the fight is confirmed, it will mean a three-month turnaround for McGregor after his 13-second KO victory over Aldo last month.
Ronda Rousey's conqueror, Holly Holm, is also expected on the card for UFC 197 as she defends her bantamweight title against Miesha Tate.
