The Football Association of Ireland's Twitter account has posted a cheeky message as they got in on the storm following Conor McGregor's apparent decision to retire on Tuesday night.

Dubliner McGregor stunned his fans with a Twitter messages suggesting he had "retired early" amid a spat with UFC chiefs over media commitments for his upcoming fight with Nate Diaz in Las Vegas.

Many observers suspect McGregor may be back in a UFC octagon sooner rather than later, but FAI chiefs have joined in the social media storm as they offered up a reminder that even the most bitter of splits can be healed.

Roy Keane appeared to have played his last international match following his infamous walk-out of the Ireland team hotel in Saipan ahead of the 2002 World Cup finals, but he later made a return to the Ireland fold, inspiring this tweet:

Maybe a tweet welcoming McGregor back into the UFC fold will not be far this space.
