'You lacked one thing and that was ability' - Martin O'Neill jokes with Robbie Savage over his limitations

Republic of Ireland manager Martin O’Neill once famously claimed the only thing Robbie Savage lacked during his playing days was ability – and now he has retracted that statement almost two decades later.

O’Neill was a guest pundit for BT Sport as he attended the FA Cup third round clash between his former clubs Wycombe and Aston Villa, which set up a reunion between the enduring annoying TV pundit Savage and his former manager.

Savage was a key part of the Leicester side O’Neill guiding to a League Cup final win against John Aldridge's Tranmere side in 2000 and he admitted he may have been a little harsh in his judgement on the former Manchester United trainee.

O’Neill went on to suggest he felt some nostalgia as he returned to the club he managed between 1990 and 1995, guiding them into the Football League for the first time.

That chapter of his career has long since ended, but he is clearly still following Wycombe’s progress, as he confirmed with this summation of their recent form.
