USGA president Diana Murphy has apologised to new Women's US Open champion Brittany Lang for repeatedly getting her name wrong during the prize presentation.

Lang secured her first major title in California after Sweden's Anna Nordqvist was handed a two-stroke penalty for grounding her club in a bunker during the three-hole aggregate play-off.

Speaking at the presentation ceremony, Murphy referred to Lang as "Bethany" on more than one occasion.

"I would like to apologise to the 2016 US Women's Open champion, Brittany Lang," Murphy said in a statement.

"During the prize presentation, I mistakenly called her by the wrong name repeatedly. I have expressed my regret to Brittany personally and explained that in the heat of the moment, I became nervous and made these mistakes.

"I appreciate her understanding and I am sorry that what I said may have taken away from a historic moment for a very deserving champion."
