An Irish mother who broke down in tears when she heard Steven Gerrard was leaving Liverpool has said her one wish is to meet the Kop captain.

A video of Antrim woman mum Hayley Masterson breaking down uncontrollably in tears went viral over the weekend when she heard Gerrard would be leaving the Merseyside club after 25 years.

“I’ve been a Liverpool fan all my life and the last couple of years watching him play has just been wonderful. Just when I heard last night, it was devastating,” said Hayley.

And she also revealed that a few years ago when she was battling cancer, efforts were made for the two to meet.

“I wasn’t well a few years back, I had cancer and his Willow Foundation were actually trying to get me to go over to Liverpool to meet him. In my darkest days, that is my one wish.”

Gerrard will leave Anfield at the end of the current season and reports suggest that LA Galaxy will offer him a contract worth more than $6m a year, with an 18-month deal likely to be on the cards.
