'There's Gary Lineker with Joseph Stalin' - Walkers selfie competition backfires spectacularly
Walkers Crisps selfie competition for tickets to next weekend's Champions League final between Real Madrid and Juventus backfired spectacularly on Wednesday when users on Twitter took advantage of the company's affiliation with Gary Lineker.
Walkers invited users to to tweet their selfies with the hashtag #WalkersWave, which would then be used in an automatically generated video with company spokesperson Gary Lineker.
The competition in theory seemed innocent, until videos started popping up across Twitter of Lineker holding photos with Joseph Stalin, Jimmy Saville, Rolf Harris, Fred West etc.
Upon realising the PR disaster that was quickly unfolding in front of them, Walkers moved to shut down the competition and apologised for any offence that may have been caused.
We recognise people were offended by irresponsible & offensive posts & we apologise. We are equally upset & have shut the activity down.— Walkers Crisps (@walkers_crisps) May 25, 2017
Had an unusual day in some very strange company. I'm sure we'll wave goodbye to them all by tomorrow.— Gary Lineker (@GaryLineker) May 25, 2017
