Stephanie Roche: A baby race for half-time entertainment was the funniest thing I have ever seen
Houston Dash striker Stephanie Roche is beginning to adjust to live as a professional athlete in the United States and says the half-time entertainment takes some getting used to.
The Republic of Ireland international made her debut for the Dash last weekend and while she is in the early stages of her new life in America, the Dubliner has been taking advantage of the wide range of major sporting teams in the city.
This has also opened her eyes to the world of in-game entertainment.
"I have tried to get to know my new city as quickly as possible and from a sporting point of view, I couldn't have asked for a better location," she told Independent.ie. "There are no shortage of major sports teams and I have been busy trying to watch as many as possible. I supported the men's team, the Houston Dynamo, when they beat Montreal Impact 3-0, and also took in the Houston Rockets victory over the New Orleans Pelicans in the NBA basketball game."
It was at the basketball game where she describes the bizarre entertainment provided for the punters.
"At half-time there was a baby race with a mat rolled out over three lanes and the first baby to cross the line at the other end was crowned the winner. The winning parents won a state of the art pillow! Yes, a pillow! It was one of the funniest, and most bizarre, things I have ever seen."
The Houston Astros baseball team also get in on the act, though Roche was thankful she escaped the attentions of the cameramen at the stadium.
"There were some funny moments at the game when the cameras spread around the ground for dance-offs and kiss cam," she said. "Dean and I sat there praying the camera wouldn't come on us and thankfully we escaped the focus of the cameraman!"
