Steeplechase runner falls headfirst into water jump at World Championships

Panamanian runner Rolanda Bell has suffered the ultimate athletics embarrassment in Beijing, after tumbling headfirst into the waterjump on the 3000m women's steeplechase.

While we wouldn't say the pictures from the World Athletics Championships are funny, particularly given the heartbreak she's probably been through, they are just a bit funny.

Bell did recover to finish the heat, but came in 20 seconds behind the next slowest athlete and so didn't qualify for the final.

Bell narrowly avoided Ireland's Kerry O'Flaherty who finished 13th in the heat.

After the race Bell, who is the daughter of an American mother and a Panamanian father, and actually lives in New York, tweeted to thank her fans in Panama.

It translates as: "Thanks to Panama for all the support of our team this year . we will encourage and Yvette Alonso together in their skills here in Beijing!"
