Joey Barton has reacted angrily to claims made by an ex-Manchester City teammate that his infamous Christmas party incident was to blame for his downward spiral.

In an early morning Twitter rant, Barton described Jamie Tandy as a "gobs****" and a "s***house" who lacked the desire and talent to make it as a professional footballer after he suggested his fight with Barton, where the midfielder stubbed out a cigar on Tandy’s eye, triggered his spiral into addiction.

Tandy (31) is now facing sentence after admitting assault charges against his girlfriend during a hearing at Manchester Crown Court and Barton has little sympathy for his former team-mate.

“He was a gobs**** a long time before I went anywhere near him. How many times is a judge going to buy his s***?," he posted on his official Twitter account.

“Reason he never made it was he was simply overweight and lacked desire and talent. Nobody to blame but himself.

“How can you possibly hit women and blame an incident a decade earlier.

“Men who hit women are nothing but s***houses.

“At the end of the day. In this World you are responsible for your own actions.”

Barton also tweeted that he would be addressing some misconceptions about him in his autobiography next year.
