Kerry fans up in arms as Bernard Brogan invited to switch on Christmas lights
Dublin star Brogan invited to switch on lights in Listowel
DUBS star Bernard Brogan is to turn on the Christmas tree lights in the Kerry town of Listowel – to the consternation of some locals.
The All-Ireland hero will flick the switch at this year's event, delighting traders from the town who invited him to perform the task.
But some members of the public took to the airwaves to complain, asking why a Kerry footballer had not been chosen instead.
Chairperson of the Listowel Independent Traders' Association, Jennifer Stack, said she would be "disappointed if anybody was insulted". She added: "Bernard is an absolute gentleman. I know plenty of ladies in particular that are delighted he's coming to Listowel . . . and I know the traders are all very much behind it."
Billy Keane, who runs John B Keane's pub in Listowel, believes the fierce rivalry between Dublin and Kerry in GAA circles is the reason behind the opposition.
"The real reason (that Bernard was asked) is that he is probably as much a Listowel man as he is a Dub. His mother was born three or four doors away from me, near to Jonny Sexton's ancestral home. His father met his mother when he was down here working."
"I'm delighted he's coming down. He is part of the diaspora," he added.
