Jose Mourinho names his team for the Carabao Cup quarter-final....and there are changes aplenty
Zlatan Ibrahimovic has been named in a Manchester United starting list for the first time this season, as manager Jose Mourinho makes 10 changes to his team for the Carabao Cup quarter-final against Bristol City.
Ibrahimovic has made fleeting appearances from the bench since returning ahead of schedule from a career-threatening knee injury in April, with the veteran Swedish forward captaining the side as he is selected in a revamped line-up.
Sergio Romero starts in goal, Matteo Darmian, Daley Blind and Luke Shaw get fresh chances to impress, Scott McTominay starts in midfield, with Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial starting together alongside Ibrahimovic.
Paul Pogba also makes a return after sitting out the last three Premier League games due to suspension, with Mourinho making it clear that he has his eyes on retaining the trophy he won at Wembley last February.
"I am not sure we are the favourites tonight," declared Mourinho. "They have knocked-out three Premier League teams and are in a good position in their league, so they will fight for the result.
"Championship teams are not just competitive teams any more as they also have a lot of quality, similar to Premier League teams so we are facing a difficult opponent."
Reports that Henrikh Mkhitaryan may earn a surprise start at Bristol City proved to be wide of the mark, but the midfielder who has been linked with a move away from United next month is handed a place on the bench.
