FAI chief John Delaney has described claims made by former Irish manager Brian Kerr that Martin O'Neill was approach by the FAI before the Sweden game in September as "rubbish"

Kerr made comments suggesting that Martin O'Neill met with a member of the FAI prior to the Republic of Ireland's World Cup qualifier against the Swedes on September 6 while Giovanni Trapattoni was still in charge.

"I don't want to bring a sour not but that was rubbish out of Brian," John Delaney told the Late, Late Show tonight.

"Playing the Sweden game we still had a great chance of getting to the World Cup playoff and for brian to say something like that is very disrespectful to people.

"We still had a great chance of qualifying and there was no way that I or anybody else in the association would appraoch another manager when we have another manger in place.

"He's wrong, he's just wrong."

Martin O'Neill will be officially unveiled tomorrow at the Gibson Hotel ahead of next week's friendly against Latvia.
