Jack Kennedy is likely to be out of action for between four to six weeks after he suffered a fracture to his right fibula at Downpatrick on Friday.

The up-and-coming jockey was hospitalised when he came to grief at the second fence of the Scottish Borders Handicap Chase, in which he was riding Shane Billy.

Kennedy was taken to Royal Victoria Hospital, in Belfast, for precautionary X-rays for a suspected fractured femur - and also to rule out the possibility of any spinal damage.

But Irish Turf Club chief medical officer Dr Adrian McGoldrick said: "It could have been a lot worse.

"A fibula fracture, I imagine, would mean it is a within a four- to six-week absence.

"I've spoken to Jack and he has no spinal problems."

Kennedy tweeted that he "should be back in no time".
