Down maintained their 100pc record but were made to work hard for this success over a dogged Mayo side at Pairc Esler.

The hosts led by seven points 10 minutes into the second half, but a string of points by Kenny Feeney – with Ciaran Charlton and Kieran McDermott chipping in – closed the gap to two, 0-15 to 0-13, with a quarter of an hour left

Conor O'Neill calmed Down nerves with his third point of the day and the home defence then survived Mayo goalkeeper Donal O'Brien's missed 65th-minute penalty after McDermott was dragged down. A late Conor Woods '65' sealed the win for Down.

They took a 0-9 to 0-6 lead into the break, despite hitting 12 wides in the opening 35 minutes, and then added four more points after the restart, with Donal Hughes becoming the eighth name on the scoresheet on 42 minutes.

It seemed like it was game over, but five second-half points from Feeney, all but one from frees, closed the gap on the league leaders.

However, Down held on for their third win of the campaign.
