Wexford survive stirring fightback

WEXFORD held off a late Carlow surge in an exciting semi-final at Wexford Park last night.

Wexford led by 16 points at the interval as they sliced through the Carlow defence, picking off some excellent scores. Credit to Carlow for a stirring finish, but their first-half display left them with no way back into the tie.

With Eoin Moore pointing excellently from midfield, Wexford were leading 0-6 to 0-3 after just nine minutes -- the three Carlow points coming from Dwayne Kavanagh frees.

Wexford's opening goal came when James Gahan's sideline ball sailed all the way to the net and, after Jamie Reck added a second goal on 27 minutes, the home side went in leading 2-13 to 0-3 at the interval.

Carlow were given a lifeline when Paudie Kehoe found the net, but Wexford responded with points from Michael O'Regan and Liam Og McGovern to lead 2-17 to 1-9 with eight minutes remaining.

Carlow put in a stirring finish, hitting 1-4 without reply -- the goal coming in additional time from Alan McDonald -- but there was no denying Wexford their victory.
