Wexford get off to flying start

Wexford got the defence of their National League Division 1 title under way in impressive fashion in Enniscorthy yesterday as they steamrolled Offaly 5-17 to 1-9, WRITES Daragh O ConchUir.

The hosts led 2-6 to 0-5 at half-time, having struck for two goals in the space of two minutes from the excellent Fiona Kavanagh and Josie Dwyer.

They ran riot after the restart, with Kate Kelly adding three points, while goals from Brid Gordon, Evelyn Quigley and Lenny Holohan closed out the game in style.

Cork made light work of a depleted Kilkenny in Killeagh, 3-14 to 0-6. Cork had plenty of big guns lining out, as the experience and power of Gemma O'Connor, Jennifer O'Leary and Briege Corkery ensured an easy win.

They led by 2-9 to 0-4 at the break, both goals coming from O'Leary, who finished with 2-4. Substitute Finola Neville got a second-half goal, while Katrina Mackey struck three points.

Dublin stunned Tipperary 2-13 to 1-15 in a thriller at Parnell Park.

Dowling leads way

Tadhg Dowling fired St Fergal's (Rathdowney) into the final and set them up for a possible senior/ junior double when he shot down Scoil Aireagail (Ballyhale) in Castlecomer on Saturday.

The flying wing-forward was the difference between the teams. By the break Dowling had seven points as Fergal's led by 0-9 to 0-2.

Paddy Delaney got a late consolation goal.

Timely goals either side of half-time put Borris VS on the road to a final clash with St Fergal's.

Near the end of the first half, Kevin Sweeney pointed to draw Johnstown level at 0-6 to 1-3, but Borris replied with a point from Craig Wall and a goal from Emmet Foley to lead 2-4 to 0-6 at the break.

Jack Kavanagh goaled in the 32nd minute and they never looked like being caught after that.
