Waters has summer in his sights
Kilkenny 2-16 Wexford 0-21
TOMAS WATERS took his place in the dugout as Kilkenny beat Wexford in an entertaining senior hurling benefit game for the injured full-back before a large crowd in New Ross.
Waters had a summer to forget after suffering a horrific knee injury during Wexford's qualifier clash with Clare, which resulted in him spending 48 days in hospital.
Clearly delighted with the response of both Wexford and Kilkenny along with the large crowd, Waters is now looking forward.
"I realise it's a long road back but hopefully when the championship comes round everything will be fine. It's an ambition to get back so I am not going to rule it out," he said.
Both Liam Dunne and Brian Cody were in experimental mode with their selections, but it did not take from the competitive nature of the game, as both sets of players were determined to lay down their mark on proceedings.
Wexford started with a scoring flourish, going 0-4 to 0-0 ahead inside five minutes through Ian Byrne, Diarmuid O'Keeffe (2) and Conor McDonald.
Kilkenny opened their account with a Padraig Walsh sixth-minute point, and went ahead five minutes later through a Walter Walsh goal. A 33rd-minute goal from sub John Joe Farrell had them leading 2-8 to 0-9 at the interval.
Colin Fennelly and Geoffrey Brennan extended the lead after the break, but with Paul Morris and Gary Moore picking off fine points, Wexford led 0-21 to 2-14 with two minutes to go.
In the closing minutes, though, Kilkenny closed out a victory through Joe Brennan and Liam Ryan points.
