MAYO manager Christy Philips felt his team played the better hurling, but they left empty-handed as the hosts produced an improved second-half performance that saw them overturn a 0-3 to 0-5 interval deficit at Trim.

Wind-assisted Mayo looked good in the opening half and were worth that interval advantage, established with four Kenny Feeney points (three frees and a '65') and the only score of the opening half from play by Cathal Freeman on 22 minutes.

A somewhat disjointed Meath worked hard against the elements and had three James Toher pointed frees to their credit which was enough to keep them in contention.

Two Feeney frees was all Mayo could muster as Meath took control for a 0-8 to 0-5 lead by the three-quarter stage with Toher (three), Peter Durnin and Willie McGrath hitting the target. That set Meath up nicely for victory and they maintained that momentum to make up for last week's setback in Arklow against Wicklow.
