A point on the stroke of 70 minutes by substitute Mark Delaney moments after he came on secured victory for Kildare after yet another titanic struggle between these sides in this replay at Arklow yesterday.

However, Wicklow will bemoan the fact that they failed to put away their chances when playing with the near gale-force wind in the first half, shooting an abysmal 17 wides in the opening 35 minutes.

They also leaked a goal to Kildare corner-forward Gerry Keegan three minutes before half-time, with the result that they were only ahead by four at the break, 2-8 to 1-7..

Evergreen Jonathan O'Neill stretched Wicklow's lead to five after the restart, but Kildare responded to cut the margin to two points on 45 minutes. Thereafter the sides traded score for score, with Keegan, Paddy Downey and Paul Divilly cancelling out Christy Moorehouse's third goal for Wicklow on 53 minutes. Extra-time again loomed as Tony Murphy brought Kildare level with just two minutes left, but then up popped supersub Delaney to put Kildare through to a meeting with Kerry next weekend, while Wicklow head down the losers group route and a trip to Armagh.
