Sinnott fires last-gasp point to complete UCD comeback
UCD 1-11 Carlow 0-13
A Garrett Sinnott point in the final minute of normal time gave UCD victory over a Carlow side which surrendered a seven-point second-half lead in an entertaining Walsh Cup tie at Dr Cullen Park in which three players -- two Carlow and one UCD -- received straight red cards following a 58th-minute fracas.
Carlow will rue a number of bad second-half misses from placed balls which allowed the students off the hook.
John Meyler's side dominated the opening half, despite the students fielding household names in Cillian Buckley, Walter Walsh, Jack Guiney, Garrett Sinnott and David Treacy.
Walsh's penetrating run in the 20th minute set up the game's only goal for Guiney as the visitors led 1-2 to 0-4, which Sinnott increased two minutes later.
A series of Carlow points before the interval saw them lead 0-12 to 1-3. Midfielder Peter Shaw's early second-half point increased the lead -- but it ended up being his side's only score of the half.
With Walsh linking the play well and Guiney accurate from frees and from play, the students ate into the home lead for midfielder Conor O'Shea of Galway to level in the 69th minute, and Sinnott then shot the winner to set up a meeting with Leinster champions Dublin.
There were three straight red cards in the game, with brothers Jack and Marty Kavanagh, and UCD's left half-back Joseph Lyng, all getting their marching orders in the 58th minute.
