Rower had to go extra mile – Joyce
Rower Inistioge 1-16 Kilnadeema-Leitrim 1-9
ROWER INISTIOGE came strong in the final minutes of extra-time to claim glory at Croke Park.
Their forwards were way off in normal time, hitting 11 wides in the first half, but found their range when it mattered, outscoring their opponents by eight points to one in extra-time.
"We made hard work of it. We got a good start, but we drove a lot of wides," said Rower's defender Kieran Joyce. "They managed to get a quick goal and the game took a mind of its own. The wides can get frustrating in the backs at times, but we were making chances and we were happy with that. We were dominating certain areas and not dominating in others so we had to grind it out."
The switches made by Rower manager Gerard Morrissey made a big difference, with three of the four substitutes he introduced getting on the scoresheet.
Replacement Conor Joyce clipped over a sideline, James Cashin got two from play and Paul Sheehan hit 0-4, including a free and a '65'.
"We finished strong and we brought in fresh legs so we managed to grind it out," said Joyce. "The forwards started to find their scoring range in the final 10 minutes. Lads have been fighting hard to get in the team all year and a few of them came on."
The game was preceded by a minute's silence for Patrick Halpin, the young Irish student who died tragically in an accident in London last week. Halpin was a member of the Kilnadeema-Leitrim club.
