YOUGHAL emerged victorious after a thrilling contest at Mallow in which both teams were reduced to 14 players in the second half.

Goals at the beginning and end of the first half placed Youghal in a good position at the break, 2-6 to 1-7 ahead. Ollie Dempsey bagged the first in the third minute while Damien Ring pounced on the stroke of half-time.

Youghal led 1-5 to 0-6 after the opening quarter. Stephen Stritch then gave Tipp side Ballina a boost when he shot to the net in the 18th minute. Ballina held the initiative until Ring's major two minutes into stoppage-time.

The new half was six minutes old when Ballina were dealt a blow with Brian McKeogh receiving a second yellow card. Despite the setback they remained in contention, and when Domhnall McKeogh goaled at the three-quarter mark, it was game on – Youghal leading 2-9 to 2-8.

Youghal's Ollie Dempsey got a straight red card with 10 minutes to go, and his side ahead by two points. They added further points from Brendan Ring but a Stephen O'Brien '65' cut the gap to just three points.

Youghal, though, held on – they travel to Ruislip to play St Gabriel's of London in the All-Ireland quarter-final next month.
