Phelan fires double as Rangers storm to glory

Mount Leinster Rangers underlined their class as they brought the Willie O'Connor Cup home for the fifth time since 2006.

Playing with the benefit of the strong wind, the All-Ireland Intermediate Club champions, appearing in their eighth successive county final, enjoyed a lightning start, bagging 1-2 inside three minutes.

David Phelan got the goal, from a groundstroke, and with Eddie Byrne prominent, Rangers extended their advantage to 1-5 to 0-0 by the end of the first quarter.

Erin's, attempting to end a 42-year famine, finally registered their first score in the 19th minute courtesy of a Craig Doyle free, and they still had a glimmer of hope at half-time, trailing 1-7 to 0-2.

An early exchange of second-half points gave hope to the Damien Fitzhenry-coached Bagenalstown side, but four Denis Murphy frees in succession preceded Alan Corcoran's 51st-minute point, which was the losers' first score from play.

Tom Mullally's Rangers then killed off the game with a quick-fire brace of goals, from Phelan and substitute Eoin Doyle, with Erin's Own goalkeeper David Miley issued with a straight red card in the aftermath of the latter.

Rangers sub Jack Murphy had earlier played a starring role in his club's MHC final success, a rare on-field double.
