Wicklow's hurlers were pushed hard for this win.

Trailing 2-10 to 1-6 at the break, Mayo came back strongly to narrow the gap to a single point, 2-15 to 3-11, with 10 minutes to go, and it took a last-minute goal by Wayne O'Gorman to make victory safe for Wicklow.

Mayo also had the better start with a goal by Kenny Feeney from a long-range free edging them into a 1-2 to 0-1 lead after 11 minutes.

Wicklow dominated the remainder of the first half, Geoffrey Bermingham starring in defence and Mikey Lee's five points from frees supplemented by goals by TJ Hennessy on 25 minutes and Christy Moorehouse on 34 minutes.

Feeney continued to be a thorn in Wicklow's side in the second half, putting the game into the melting pot with his second goal on 52 minutes, and Wicklow only avoided falling behind at that stage as a result of some fine saves by Dan O'Neill.

On 61 minutes, Fergal Boland cut the margin to the minimum, but Mikey Lee and George O'Brien countered with scores for Wicklow before O'Gorman fed off Andy O'Brien for the clincher on 69 minutes.
