Number of clubs supplying Cats' U-21 talent scary omen for rivals
KILKENNY may have set something of a record by naming no fewer than 19 subs alongside the starting 15 for this evening's Leinster U-21 hurling semi-final against Wexford.
However, more noteworthy is the club break-up of the 34 players involved. Twelve clubs are represented on the starting team, with a further eight represented on the subs. That's 20 different clubs, but it gets more interesting than that.
Of the 12 clubs making up the first 15, only two -- Dunnamaggin and Tullaroan -- were represented on the starting team for last year's senior All-Ireland final. That means no U-21 starters from such famous clubs as Ballyhale Shamrocks, James Stephens, Fenians, Carrickshock or O'Loughlin Gaels.
Now what can this mean? Are the traditional haunts being overtaken in the talent race?
Are other clubs now producing even better young talent for Kilkenny? It's pretty scary for the rest of the hurling world.
