NUIG pounce after Hyland and Dunphy see red
NUI Galway 1-17 Laois 1-14
NUI Galway struck for three late points to see off 13-man Laois in Rathdowney.
The students made the most of two lapses in discipline by the hosts, who lost Willie Hyland and Willie Dunphy to straight red cards in the space of 10 second-half minutes.
Laois were leading by three points prior to Hyland's dismissal for a wild pull on a dropping ball, and that was the cue for NUIG to launch their comeback.
They got it back to one before Dunphy was dismissed for dissent, and Niall O'Brien then got Galway level before Michael Mullins, Kevin Downes and Ger O'Donoghue pointed in injury-time to put the seal on the win.
Laois got off to a bright start, with Stephen Maher, Cha Dwyer, Matthew Whelan and Dunphy helping them into a 0-4 to 0-1 lead after just six minutes. A series of missed chances, however, meant they failed to kick on, and NUI Galway took advantage with a goal from Downes.
That score helped them to keep their noses in front for the remainder of the half, and they led 1-7 to 0-9 at the break.
Laois quickly erased that lead with a goal from Dunphy, and a brace of points from debutant Patrick Whelan pushed them three ahead after 15 minutes of the second half.
They were looking good for the win at that stage, but the two dismissals turned the game on its head, and handed the initiative to NUI Galway.
