No place for Dan but Deise bench may prove crucial

Cliona Foley

THERE'S no starting place for former Hurler of the Year Dan Shanahan in Waterford's starting line-up for Sunday's big rematch with Kilkenny.

But 'Big Dan' is among the substitutes which, just as importantly, include both Ken McGrath and Gary Hurney, indicating that they too are set to play important roles as replacements against the mighty Cats in the All-Ireland SHC semi-final.

McGrath has been sidelined since undergoing knee surgery after Waterford's drawn Munster SHC semi-final against Limerick, while dual star Hurney has been recovering from a broken collarbone he suffered in training. This is the first time since that either have made the 30-man match panel.

The team also sees two changes to the starters with Jamie Nagle and Shane Casey losing out to Eoin McGrath and Shane Walsh.

It was Walsh -- who replaced Casey last time out -- that scored the vital 68th-minute goal, set up by fellow substitute Shanahan, that crowned the Decies' remarkable comeback against Galway in the quarter-final.
