McElligott the last-gasp hero

Granard 2-8 Ashbourne CS 2-7

Cnoc Mhuire

An injury-time goal from midfielder Aidan McElligott clinched the title for Cnoc Mhuire, Granard in Mullingar.

Wind-assisted Ashourne took the lead in the fourth minute with a well-taken goal from full-forward Jack Hannigan. They led by six points approaching the interval, but a great goal from Fionnan O'Reilly in the 28th minute left his side well in contention at half-time, trailing by 1-5 to 1-2.

Granard took the lead for the first time midway through the second half when their impressive captain David McGivney converted a free. A hard-fought final quarter saw Ashbourne's Darragh McGovern red-carded, but his side seemed to have won the day when Hannigan converted a 60th-minute penalty to put the Meath school two points to the good.

However, McElligott won it for the Longford outfit when he fisted the ball to the net from close range in a dramatic finish.
